Iota is a screen saver that displays simple particles falling against a variety of backgrounds.
We like the cartoon-ish quality to the falling shapes, but there is something missing from this screensaver. It just isn't interesting enough. Fairly easy on the eye, but in our opinion little long term value.

It's not rocket science but still a bit of physics. Watch it - watch closer. You're eyes getting tired, you feel sleepy... Wake up!

A suitably repetitive scene of a Newton's Cradle set. The video is a bit too jerky for us to consider using it long-term. The clicking noise also quickly becomes irritating, luckily you can turn it off in the preferences.

The perfect beach. Waves roll in. In the distance some birds can be heard. It can't get any better than this. I wish I were there.
Well-executed fullscreen video of a relaxing beach scene, complete with lapping waves, blue skies, and swaying palm trees. Truly excellent. The default audio volume was a little high for us, but that was easily fixed in the preferences. Requires QuickTime7. The video could be a little sharper but in the grand scheme of things it's a fairly minor quibble.

You are not using your windows? Fenêtres Volantes make them fly! After some idle time that can be set in the System Preferences, the windows take off the screen and flutter in the void. On a mouse move, the windows immediately come back and stuck to their original position.
A fantastic module. We particularly love the way the windows all fly back to their original locations when you interrupt the screensaver. We're not so sure about the empty desktop in the middle of the screen, but other than that minor quibble this is an excellent screensaver.

The BTFishes screen saver looks for nearby Bluetooth devices (e.g. cell phones and other computers), and for each device summons a unique, colourful fish. It will also display a news feed of your choice.
An interesting idea which could be fun in a crowded setting. As you can see from our screenshot a solitary Bluetooth phone doesn't quite cut the mustard! (Our BT mouse wasn't even detected.) We do wonder how this screensaver would affect a laptop's battery life but suspect it's not such a big deal given that it is only detecting other devices and not pairing or sending data. The fish are fairly simple, but given this is only a very early release we would expect to see some improvement there.

Electric Sheep is a free, open source screen saver run by thousands of people all over the world. It can be installed on any ordinary PC or Mac. When these computers "sleep", the screen saver comes on and the computers communicate with each other by the internet to share the work of creating morphing abstract animations known as "sheep". The result is a collective "android dream", an homage to Philip K. Dick's novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Anyone watching one of these computers may vote for their favorite animations using the keyboard. The more popular sheep live longer and reproduce according to a genetic algorithm with mutation and cross-over. Hence the flock evolves to please its global audience. You can also design your own sheep and submit them to the gene pool.
A fantastic idea which has been implemented well. Some of the animations are eye-poppingly fantastic. Unfortunately others are more mediocre. For some of us who simply like a good-looking screensaver the less attractive animations might rule this module out. However we're sure that there will be others who will love the whole collaboration idea and ability to rate animations. Also available for Windows-based PCs.

A Quartz Composer screensaver of unusually high quality. So much so that Apple themselves are hosting it. Looks like the best fireworks night sparkler in the world. We like it - a lot. Unfortunately there are zero configuration options.

Renders a fairly realistic water effect over your desktop, showing it distorted through the wavy surface of the water as raindrops fall on the surface. It uses quite a bit of CPU power. There are configuration options to vary the accuracy of the simulation to fit the processing power available.
An incredible module. The water effect is similar to the ripple you get when adding a widget to the OS X Dashboard, but to see it repeatedly against the background of your desktop is truly awe-inspiring. One minor quibble would be that no part of the screen ever goes black, although given the constant colour changing each pixel undergoes this is probably irrelevant. Requires a relatively recent video card.

ClockSaver is a port of the Screensaver-module "KClock" found in the KDE Desktop Environment to Mac OS X. It shows a simple but elegant analog clock where you can customize the colors for the clock hands, the color for the clock scale, whether a second hand should be visible, and the size of the displayed clock.
Simple yet effective, we find this basic clock screensaver strangely pleasing.

SpaceTime Screensaver for OS X demonstrates a 3D animated warp speed effect and star field skymap. This is Free Software with complete XCode v2.4 sources available via the download page.
Reminiscent of the 'warp drive' style screensavers of yesteryear, this adds a touch of modern OpenGL motion blurring to the passing stars. Unfortunately the star field itself needs some contellations or galaxies or something - the current incarnation is too uniform and obviously artificial. There is also a selection of frighteningly smooth and featureless spaceships available.

This screensaver draws snowflakes falling down your screen. Simple enough, but the oh-so-clever part is that it uses a semi-physical model for growing each snowflake, meaning every snowflake is actually unique, and also that it uses a quite a bit of processing power. But that's the price you pay for indivduality!
A nice rendition of snowflakes falling. In our opinion this is more atmospheric than its only other competitor. Might appeal to some, especially around Christmas, but otherwise limited appeal.

Don't you ever wish that you could get your Mac to crash like a Windows machine? We don't either. On the other hand, we decided that we really wanted a screensaver that made it look like our Mac had crashed while running Windows. Why? We're twisted like that. So we made one.

This screensaver will not crash your Mac. It will not give you Windows. It will not hurt your cat, dog, family member, or other pet. It will, however, display one of over 200 highly realistic BSODs -- complete with real stop codes and messages and dynamically-generated memory addresses. Basically, it will look just like a real, not-so-live Windows crash -- enough so that you could actually look up what the error codes mean in Microsoft's documentation. (But why would you?)
