Street Crossing

1.2
Freeware
Author's description: New York City, Times Square, on May 9th 2002. Cars passing, a truck turning right. Red means Stop. Green means Go. It's raining. People are walking around with umbrellas. An image of the American metropolis as can be seen every day at this street corner. This perfectly ordinary image contrasts with the stunning city of NYC as we think we know it. Edited in slow motion, this looping movie opens our eyes to the aesthetics and poetry of banality, taking thus the power of alleviating us.
Our verdict: A very unusual but great screensaver. The neverending video clip has a hypnotic quality despite the everyday scenery. Unfortunately the fixed aspect ratio results in two thick vertical bands on either side of a wide-format screen. On a normal aspect monitor this module would rate four stars. There was also an annoying display bug in the Screen Effects preference pane which causes the preview window to always display StreetCrossing, which has reportedly been fixed in version 1.2.
